McClain Crit

McClain Pacific Crit

It seems just a few months ago I raced this very race but it has been 365 days. I had been pretty focused and anticipating this first NRC race of the year. I woke up early Saturday morning around 6:20am because my roommates are old men and can’t sleep past 7am. They headed out to eat breakfast while I got some more sleep and woke up later to my hot plate and made a huge bowl oatmeal. Around 9am the weather was still chilly and we headed out for an easy spin for about 1 1/2.

After relaxing at the hotel for a few hours, I got dressed and went down to the race.
The race started off pretty slow, usually this race is blistering fast and everybody is going “a wall” to stay in the front and or to win primes. In the middle on the race a group of about 9 guys rolled away and stayed away for the remainder of the race. Every team was represented besides Eric Saunders team “Successful living” so they where forced to chase. I had been following Greg Henderson and he just went “buff down” after hitting a street reflector and took Alex from Jelly Belly with him. At the moment I saw him going down, I was right in the middle of the crap and to avoid the crash, I did this crazy move with my body and bike and in turn I felt something pull in my back, I immediately went to the back and tried stretching it. I spent about 10 laps at the back and moved back to the front with 15 laps to go.

At 15 laps to go things started to heat up and people where going crazy for position and it got really hairy. I would have good position on one lap then the next lap I would lose 10 spots. This happen to me lap after lap. So what I tried to do is find a team that would be leading out there sprinter, so I found…. no one. I was on my own and I could not pull it off. I was happy I didn’t crash and I always thank God for protecting me.

Tomorrow is 120mile road race and I think ill do well. I feel pretty good. Coach Lim wants me to put out some good efforts so ill be racing for a break.
